{"id":387,"date":"2006-01-13T13:41:37","date_gmt":"2006-01-13T13:41:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/localhost\/wp_genova\/?p=387"},"modified":"2006-01-13T13:41:37","modified_gmt":"2006-01-13T13:41:37","slug":"so_much_on_my_p-11","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/blog.dongenova.com\/site\/so_much_on_my_p-11\/","title":{"rendered":"So Much On My Plate, Jan. 13\/06"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If you&#8217;re looking for the Emily Richards cookbook contest, click <a href=\"\/2006\/01\/food_for_though-18.html\">here.<\/a>&nbsp; <\/p>\n<p><strong>So Much On My Plate, Friday, January 13th:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Today I talked about the resurgence of Slow Cookers as a method of cooking and featured recipes from a book by Judith Finlayson called <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.ca\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/0778801330\/qid=1137188692\/sr=2-1\/ref=sr_2_3_1\/702-7872942-7516868\">The Healthy Slow Cooker<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"lightbox\" href=\"\/images\/various\/cooker.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Cooker\" height=\"271\" alt=\"Cooker\" src=\"\/images\/various-small\/cooker.jpg\" width=\"200\" border=\"0\" style=\"FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 5px 5px 0px\" \/><\/a> I haven&#8217;t used a slow cooker in ages, but over the past week I&#8217;ve made 3 recipes from the book, all with great results.&nbsp; Here&#8217;s the one for Apple Oatmeal with Wheat Berries, a great way to wake up in the morning, with breakfast already made!<\/p>\n<p>Ingredients:&nbsp; <\/p>\n<p>1 and a 1\/2 cups steel-cut oats<\/p>\n<p>1\/2 cup wheat berries<\/p>\n<p>2 apples, peeled, cored and chopped<\/p>\n<p>1\/2 tsp ground cinnamon<\/p>\n<p>1\/2 tsp vanilla<\/p>\n<p>3 1\/2 cups water<\/p>\n<p>1 cup cranberry or apple juice<\/p>\n<p>This works well in a small, slow cooker, but I used my large one and just cut the cooking time by a couple of hours.&nbsp; First, grease the slow cooker stoneware with butter, margarine or oil.&nbsp; In the cooker, combine the steel-cut oats, wheat berries, apples, cinnamon and vanilla.&nbsp; Add water and juice.&nbsp; Cover and cook on High for 4 hours or on Low for 8 hours or overnight.&nbsp; When ready to serve, stir well, spoon into bowls and top with fruit, nuts or sugar of your choice.<\/p>\n<p>My new slow cooker is from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.breville.ca\/en\/\">Breville<\/a>.
