If you want to listen to their comments, click <a href=\"\/files\/fft-feb21-07.mp3\">here<\/a>  for an mp3.<\/p>\n<p>The winner was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.actii.com\/index.jsp\">Act II <\/a>popcorn, beating out an organic competitor, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.caudillseed.com\/11-WholeAlternatives\/pc1.htm\">Whole Alternatives<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.orville.com\/products\/microwave_popcorn\/index.jsp\">Orville Redenbacher&#8217;s<\/a> &#8216;Corn on the Cob&#8217; flavour. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"file:\/\/\/C:\/DOCUME~1\/Don\/LOCALS~1\/Temp\/moz-screenshot-1.jpg\" \/><a href=\"\/images\/various\/img_1825_3.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"200\" height=\"266\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Img_1825_3\" title=\"Img_1825_3\" src=\"\/images\/various-small\/img_1825_3.jpg\" style=\"margin: 0px 5px 5px 0px; float: left;\" \/><\/a> The above photo shows the smear of fat left on the countertop after the &#8216;Corn on the Cob&#8217; flavour bag leaked.&nbsp; It was tough to clean up!&nbsp; The lower photo features Taste Panel member Sam Corea contemplating one of the competitors.&nbsp; Thank you Taste Panel!&nbsp; Their next assignment is frozen pizza.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong><br \/><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong><br \/><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Update:&nbsp; Try Making Your Own Microwave Popcorn<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Late last week I received a note from listener Heather Webber, who makes her own style of microwave popcorn.&nbsp; I haven&#8217;t tried this in the test kitchen, so please be careful!<\/p>\n<p>1.&nbsp; I use a paper lunch bag or one the size you get from a grocery&nbsp; <br \/> store bakery.&nbsp; I choose not to use those with lettering&nbsp; to avoid the&nbsp; <br \/> printer chemicals.<br \/> 2.&nbsp; Pour in 1\/4-1\/3 cup of popcorn and fold over the top of the bag&nbsp; <br \/> about an inch and then again.&nbsp; (a double fold)<br \/> 3.&nbsp; Put it in the microwave on popcorn setting.&nbsp; Sometimes I add an&nbsp; <br \/> extra 30 seconds to a minute if it was slow to start popping.<br \/> 4.&nbsp; Put some butter or margarine in a microwavable cup and get a bowl&nbsp; <br \/> out.<br \/> 5.&nbsp; As soon as you remove the bag from the microwave, put the butter&nbsp; <br \/> in for 15-20 seconds.<br \/> 6.&nbsp; Pour the popcorn in the bowl, top with butter and add a touch of&nbsp; <br \/> salt. Enjoy.<\/p>\n<p> 7.&nbsp; The &quot;old maids&quot; in the bottom of the bowl can be re-popped in the&nbsp; <br \/> same bag, if you want to try.&nbsp; The best ones have the texture of&nbsp; <br \/> puffed wheat or corn, or even corn nuts.<br \/> 8.&nbsp; I use the bag up to three times.&nbsp; I don&#8217;t think it is safe if the&nbsp; <br \/> bag has a lot of fat on it from re-poppings.<\/p>\n<p> I heard about this from a friend in Alberta who uses a large paper&nbsp; <br \/> grocery bag to make popcorn for his family.&nbsp; I haven&#8217;t tried a big&nbsp; <br \/> grocery bag &#8211; maybe it works even&nbsp; better.<\/p>\n<p> Have fun.&nbsp; Heather<\/p>\n<p> <\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This week on Food For Thought, my taste panel takes on three different microwave popcorn products and rates them on flavour, aroma, and poppability!
