{"id":371,"date":"2006-02-21T07:18:57","date_gmt":"2006-02-21T07:18:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/localhost\/wp_genova\/?p=371"},"modified":"2006-02-21T07:18:57","modified_gmt":"2006-02-21T07:18:57","slug":"pacific_palate__2-7","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.dongenova.com\/site\/pacific_palate__2-7\/","title":{"rendered":"Pacific Palate &#8211; Sri Lankan Food"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a rel=\"lightbox\" href=\"\/images\/various\/sri_lanka.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Sri_lanka\" height=\"144\" alt=\"Sri_lanka\" src=\"\/images\/various-small\/sri_lanka.gif\" width=\"200\" border=\"0\" style=\"FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 5px 5px 0px\" \/><\/a> <\/p>\n<p><strong>UPDATE <em>Sapphire is closing its doors as of March 1st due to trouble with its lease.&nbsp; Watch this blog for news of a new location.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Today on Pacific Palate I traveled to Sri Lanka, the island nation off the southeast coast of India, courtesy of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sapphirecanada.com\/\">Sapphire <\/a>restaurant in Vancouver&#8217;s Gastown.&nbsp; Sri Lankan cuisine has lots of different influences, including Malay, Portuguese, Dutch Indonesia, and the Moors.&nbsp; It all turns up in delicious dishes at Sapphire, which is at 216 Abbott Street in Vancouver.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"lightbox\" href=\"\/images\/various\/deviled_beef.JPG\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Deviled_beef\" height=\"149\" alt=\"Deviled_beef\" src=\"\/images\/various-small\/deviled_beef.JPG\" width=\"200\" border=\"0\" style=\"FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 5px 5px 0px\" \/><\/a>&nbsp; The restaurant is a family-run operation with Joseph DeVaz at the helm.&nbsp; The DeVaz&#8217;s came to Canada 21 years ago, but this is their first go at their own restaurant.&nbsp; The dishes can be made Asian stir-fry style, like this &#8216;devilled beef&#8217;, or be influenced by Pakistani dishes like this rice biryani. <a rel=\"lightbox\" href=\"\/images\/various\/biryani_rice.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Biryani_rice\" height=\"142\" alt=\"Biryani_rice\" src=\"\/images\/various-small\/biryani_rice.jpg\" width=\"200\" border=\"0\" style=\"FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 5px 5px 0px\" \/><\/a> <\/p>\n<p>They also offer Sri Lankan curries, and South Asian fusion dishes of rice and noodle bowls.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"lightbox\" href=\"\/images\/various\/hoppers.JPG\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Hoppers\" height=\"149\" alt=\"Hoppers\" src=\"\/images\/various-small\/hoppers.JPG\" width=\"200\" border=\"0\" style=\"FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 5px 5px 0px\" \/><\/a> A dish you won&#8217;t find anywhere else than at Sapphire is the hopper, a thin crepe made in a special pan that sometimes has an egg soft-cooked into the base, and then is served with various sambals, chutneys and curries.&nbsp; Yum!&nbsp; Give the restaurant a try, I don&#8217;t think you&#8217;ll be disappointed.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>UPDATE Sapphire is closing its doors as of March 1st due to trouble with its lease.&nbsp; Watch this blog for news of a new location.
