One of the local papers took my role a step further and called me the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cowichannewsleader.com\/news\/275133811.html\" target=\"_blank\">&#8216;unofficial ambassador&#8217;<\/a> to Savour Cowichan and I have discovered the name has stuck. Barge On In was a great kick-off to Savour Cowichan, and the sold out Sip, Savour and Support event on Saturday raised lots of money for the Canucks Autism Network. Canuck&#8217;s star defenceman Dan Hamhuis was on hand to help auction off some Canucks sweaters and special game tickets which garnered thousands of dollars once the auctioneer was &#8216;all done&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_45241\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-45241\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-45241\" src=\"\/images\/2014\/09\/DSC_4344-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Paella at Cherry Point Estate Wines\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"\/images\/2014\/09\/DSC_4344-300x200.jpg 300w, \/images\/2014\/09\/DSC_4344-1024x685.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-45241\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Paella at Cherry Point Estate Wines<\/p><\/div>\n<p><em><strong>On Sunday we headed to<\/strong><\/em> <a href=\"http:\/\/cherrypointestatewines.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Cherry Point Estate Wines\u00a0<\/a>\u00a0where our gracious hosts Xavier and Maria Clare Bonilla plied us with Xavier&#8217;s special paella and glasses of the Cherry Point Coastal Red, made from Pinot Noir grapes but fashioned like a Spanish Rioja and a perfect accompaniment to the paella. Xavier and Maria Clara had been up at 4 in the morning to start the paella, 600-odd servings of it, loaded with chorizo sausage, chicken, mussels and red pepper. So delicious! Apparently making the paella is a &#8216;man&#8217;s job&#8217; in Spain, just as manning the bbq is here in North America, and according to tradition, the grandfather of the family is usually in charge. All the winemakers and grape growers I&#8217;ve spoken to over the past couple of weeks have been very happy with this year&#8217;s crop and are anticipating a great vintage year.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_45233\" style=\"width: 247px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-45233\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-45233\" src=\"\/images\/2014\/09\/IMG_0509-237x300.jpg\" alt=\"Hilary Abbott, Cheesemaker\" width=\"237\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"\/images\/2014\/09\/IMG_0509-237x300.jpg 237w, \/images\/2014\/09\/IMG_0509.jpg 506w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 237px) 100vw, 237px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-45233\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Hilary Abbott, Cheesemaker<\/p><\/div>\n<p><em><strong>From Cherry Point we dropped in<\/strong> <\/em>at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/pages\/The-Creamery-at-Cheese-Pointe-Farm\/615676298479825\" target=\"_blank\">The Creamery at Cheese Pointe Farm<\/a>, where Hilary Abbott was busy making cheese while his daughter Bronwyn kept busy in the shop, doling out samples of Hilary&#8217;s products, beautifully served on delicate Belgian endive leaves, and selling lots of yogurt and flavoured cream cheeses as well as his longer-aged cheeses like St. Michel and Youbou Blue. The launch film that evening is called More Than Honey, an award-winning documentary about bee colony collapse disorder.<\/p>\n<p>On <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Saturday, October 4th at noon<\/span> at the Victoria Public Market \u00a0I will be doing a <a href=\"http:\/\/victoriapublicmarket.com\/free-demo-don-genova\/\" target=\"_blank\">free demonstration<\/a> of the Thermomix cooking machine. It&#8217;s<span style=\"color: #545454;\">\u00a0a German-designed, French-manufactured device I&#8217;ve\u00a0been using for a few years now on an almost daily basis. \u00a0It can replace most, if not all of the kitchen gadgets you have cluttering your counter. \u00a0I&#8217;ll show you how it can grind, knead, chop, cook, steam, stir, juice and even make homemade Nutella!<\/span><\/p>\n<p>And there may be something happening\u00a0on Sunday night, but that is still TBC.
